Humans have a terrible egocentric problem. Since we walk in and out of the caverns, we thought that we were the center of the universe. Just considering the sun being the center, and not us, humans, cost some people lots of trouble or even their lives. This is why you feel essential in your company or your business. You’re wired to feel like that. There are even people out there that don’t leave their jobs for “not letting the mates down, without me” or for “continuing my legacy”, or any other egocentric and paternalist crap that our primitive brains fabricate to keep us safe. Under the tree that we know best. Leaving the tribe is always risky. Better to stay here, because I’m essential...
Well, you’re not. I repeat. No matter how good you think you are, you’re not essential. This week, I had the opportunity to celebrate a farewell lunch as I left my job at the end of last month. You could think that changing a CEO is a big change for a company, and bla, bla, bla… Well… It’s not. I could see the faces of my former teammates and they were happy, living their lives, the business is still there with its problems, challenges and opportunities. Life will not be the same. Not better. Not worse. Just different. People and businesses will move on. And that’s the way it’ll be. Once that you understand this lesson you’ll feel freer. You know that you can leave your job. You know that you can start a business. You know that you can leave your partner if love is gone. Etc. Because you’ll continue to live, and your friends, teammates, loved ones will do the same. You are free to look for a new tree… even far, far away, even look for a new forest. There are plenty of opportunities out there looking for non-essential people. If you start having the humble understanding that you’re not essential… you’ll start tasting a new kind of freedom. More thoughts below. They call it “cheating”. That bad it is. The school system, the system paid and sustained by your taxes. They train students to take tests on their own. If a child attempts to cooperate at test time… as I said… it is called ‘cheating.’ In the real world, business owners cooperate at test time. Engineers cooperate at test time. And so on… In life, except in the critical time for your brain, school time, every day is test time. Then, they penalize you to make mistakes. You do a mistake; you...
If you are the person in the room that knows the more, you have a problem. Well… you, your business, your boss or your company. It doesn’t matter. Many feels comfortable in that situation. I’d say even more. Many are terrified of that not being the case. They hire people based on “being more stupid than themselves”, “being younger”, “have less experience”. That’s it. Logically, if possible, they need to come from a good school, speak some languages, etc. But the main criteria is: “don’t be...
The same thing that discourages some motivates others. Another person’s well-being, their neighbor’s prosperity. A car, a house, a trip. Some feel attacked by this; others feel motivated. The first group looks for an excuse to justify that it’s a lie, unattainable, just luck, connections, an inheritance. The second group believes by default; they don’t consider it might be a lie because they know that when you believe something is achievable, you end up seeing the path to achieve it. Where...
