If you had $100k, what would you choose?

Before answering that question whose answer may change the way you see life, let me tell you something.

Today is settlement day for me.

Another deal.

Aristotle once said this: “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit”.

I like deals.

I do deals.

I become a deal maker.

With more deals, I’m becoming a better deal maker.

This thing that may seem simple or easy to you is less usual than you think.

Excellence is achieved by repetition, and improving through each repetition, on and on, not by reading books, not by going to the next terrific event of your industry to get some pats in your back while you pat others.

Many people plan forever. They do 30 PowerPoints. They seek the approvals of 50 VPs… before doing anything.

You may like that… I don’t know

I had enough of it.

Too bad for your health - body, mind and pocket health, by the way.

This is why I prefer doing.

Doing a little bit.

Learn.

Repeat.

In principle, I don’t mind too much the result…

Although, I don’t like losing money, I know that this may be a price to pay, an investment to do for learning.

Many people invested in expensive MBAs without risking anything.

The result is that they learned something.

But the real learning is doing it.

You could bet on 100k$ in an MBA to learn something and put some better clothes to your CV in the hope of this being appreciated by a few companies so that you recover your money back in 10 years.

Or you could risk 100k$ in a deal that may be a life changing event.

Most people choose the first option.

Of course, the piece of paper on your wall seems the safest option.

But then, don’t complain about the 1% or the rich.

They do things that most don’t.

That brings different results which put them in a different position.

They are not smarter than you, more handsome than you, speak better than you, or go to the toilet less than you.

Well… as I said… I like deals.

Do you believe that Amazon could be built by Jeff Bezos doing 15$/hour tasks? I have this debate very often with entrepreneurs from all sorts of backgrounds. They believe that they need to do everything by themselves. If you want a business not to grow, or you want your business to get stuck or simply your health going to hell… do all by yourself. Schedule meetings, take minutes, actions, do follow ups, check the receipts, upload this into the accounting tool, etc. etc. etc. All by yourself....

I like saying “be gentle with yourself”. I see too many people being the worst critics of themselves. Never enough. Never done well. More, and more, and more. Don’t take me wrong. I’m a fun of self-motivation. I’m all-in in improving myself, in challenging myself. But how you do it matters. The words we speak have a direct and definite effect upon our thoughts. Thoughts create words, for words are the vehicles of ideas. Words also affect thoughts and help to condition if not to create...

It was winter in Montreal and I was making a tour to some VIP guys from Madrid. It’s normal that if you’re building a $1.5bn project, you are interested in knowing first hand how the project is going. “Fascinating” “So cold” “So white” “Snow everywhere” They pointed out a place outside the construction site. And then I saw it. A dad had made for his children a hockey field in the lake. Smoothed the ice. Put goals. Painted the field. Even he put some lighting. The lake was in his backyard. My...
