10 years late and 1,357% over budget

If you like infrastructure, and are worried about your taxes wasted, you should take a look to this.

But first, let me tell you a story.

10 years late and 1,357% over budget.

They gave a massive piece of infrastructure to someone that had not built anything bigger than a Chihuahua’s house.

This is like giving to me the fabrication of an atomic bomb… I haven’t even been in Valencia launching firecrackers…

What could be wrong?

Sidney opera was assigned to Jørn Utzon… almost a fresher.

Great painter, but not a superb architect… at least not at the time.

Construction started in 1959 and was originally scheduled to finish in 1963.

It ultimately opened in October 1973.

Ten years late.

Just like that.

And the budget?

Any savings?

Yes…

Of course.

From an estimated A$7 million, the bill increased to A$102 million.

Just over 1,357% above initial estimates.

But look.

It could be worse.

They project could have stopped altogether…

And it was very close to be abandoned… a few times.

All this to tell you the importance of experience.

If you don’t give the reno of your kitchen to a rocky, why governments still put in charge people without any experience. Not done it before.

Think about it.

In the course below, you see this path, and how it could be corrected.

Not an easy task.

By the way, if you are thinking about buying it, do it now.

I’m bundling this course with other projects and other lessons learnt, and it will cost more, very soon.

Learn from experience.

In infrastructure, prices tend to go up.

By the answers of yesterday’s email, I see that people love Canada. I do. So here you are more meat. Montreal… or as we say in Montreal… Montréal. Early 2010s. Project: McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) PPP Value: ~ CAD $1.3 billion Model: DBFM Canada again. Sophisticated market. Experienced advisers. Polished risk matrices. I was there practising kung fu and delivering infrastructure. The goal? Deliver one of the largest hospital redevelopments in North America through PPP. And make it...

Toronto. 2015. Project: Eglinton Crosstown LRT. Value: CAD $5+ billion. Model: DBFM. Jurisdiction: Canada — the global gold standard of PPPs. The agency wanted efficiency. Faster procurement. Faster close. Cleaner risk transfer. Put a medal in the chest for opening the day before election day. So they did what PPP manuals love to say: “Allocate risk to the party best able to manage it.” That sentence has probably financed more claims for lawyers than any other in infrastructure history....

This is the key question that made his face change. Last week. A mentee. Shocked by a very simple question. Look, I’ve seen through the years people living in a cage. Of self-imposed believes and limitations. You can blame your parents, your wife or husband, society, the lefties, Bad Bunny or Donald T. Whatever. These limitations, self-imposed, are holding you back. If you believe that it’s impossible to multiply by 10 your income… You’ll miss the opportunity of letting your brain being in...
