Did you know this gold medalist?

Tell me if this story does not make your ass get uncomfortable.

1912.

Stockholm Olympics.

Jim Thorpe, an athlete.

On the morning of his competition in the decathlon, he discovered something absurd: someone had stolen his shoes.

Yeah… no shoes.

And look… in 1912, you didn’t have shoe shops in every corner.

Well… He didn’t panic.

He didn’t call off the event.

He went digging through trash cans and found two mismatched shoes, one too big and one too small.

He wore extra socks to make the big one fit.

Then he went on to win the gold medal.

Just like that.

And not just in the decathlon.

He also won gold in the pentathlon.

Barefoot?

No. Wearing trash-picked, ill-fitting shoes.

Yeah… again, just like that.

Of course, Jim didn’t get there by luck.

He got there because of years of relentless training, running, jumping, throwing in the hot sun, in the cold mornings, day after day, alone, without sponsors, without social media likes or fancy facilities.

What made him special wasn’t talent.

It was the brutal consistency, the mindset that said “show up anyway.”

While you complain that your coffee is too cold or too hot.

That Slack or Teams is giving you a hard time.

That the laptop got a new blue screen of death.

That the boss is not listening to you.

Or all the other things that are not perfect…

Someone else is winning gold medals… even on someone’s shoes.

Before answering that question whose answer may change the way you see life, let me tell you something. Today is settlement day for me. Another deal. Aristotle once said this: “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit”. I like deals. I do deals. I become a deal maker. With more deals, I’m becoming a better deal maker. This thing that may seem simple or easy to you is less usual than you think. Excellence is achieved by repetition, and improving through each...

Do you believe that Amazon could be built by Jeff Bezos doing 15$/hour tasks? I have this debate very often with entrepreneurs from all sorts of backgrounds. They believe that they need to do everything by themselves. If you want a business not to grow, or you want your business to get stuck or simply your health going to hell… do all by yourself. Schedule meetings, take minutes, actions, do follow ups, check the receipts, upload this into the accounting tool, etc. etc. etc. All by yourself....

I like saying “be gentle with yourself”. I see too many people being the worst critics of themselves. Never enough. Never done well. More, and more, and more. Don’t take me wrong. I’m a fun of self-motivation. I’m all-in in improving myself, in challenging myself. But how you do it matters. The words we speak have a direct and definite effect upon our thoughts. Thoughts create words, for words are the vehicles of ideas. Words also affect thoughts and help to condition if not to create...
