In New Zealand there is a survey about the infrastructure world going on. They ask you two questions: One: how important you think that it is to have a pipeline for decision makers? Answer: critical. Two: how good is the actual pipeline. Answer: useless. The reason is simple. The actual pipeline is a wish list. A list of projects that want to be built. That’s great. But where is the tracking about what is in the pipeline and what is actually being delivered? If that’s not there, there is no accountability. No one, and trust me, no foreign player, could use the pipeline to justify anything to open offices in NZ, invest heavily in the country, and bring talent and develop talent for the long term. That’s not a problem of NZ. If you compare it to Dubai, you’ll see the difference. There is a pipeline. They guys actually put the project to work. Once signed, they may have some delays, I agree, but they start and they finish and they repeat. That builds momentum. That builds teams, good teams, on both sides of the table. That creates accountability and credibility – this is what you said you’ll be building, this is what you delivered. The rest is fireworks for bureaucrats and some politicians worried about their chairs… nothing more. An Amazon wish list says more about you than you think. Remember that. And if you want to know about those good teams and how they deliver infrastructure, click below. PD 1: If you liked this email, don't keep it in secret and forward it to a friend. Today I had some conversations about one of the biggest sources of delay, frustration, and conflict in PPPs:The Review Procedures. Agencies still treat them like they’re signing a traditional construction contract. They micromanage the design. They dive into details they don’t own. And worst of all — they brief their consultants poorly (if at all) on what the review is supposed to achieve. The result? Endless comments that add no value. Delays that push the schedule back months. An...
A few birthdays this week. And you know what. People get older. Time passes by… but they do not necessarily grow up. As Robert Kiyosaki once said “Many people run from mom and dad’s shelter to the shelter of a company or the government”. Take government and you can exchange it by “a company”, “a secure job”, “a long term project”… Too many people spend their lives looking for guarantees and spend all their lives avoiding risk, avoiding growing up, and always looking for a surrogate “parent”...
I don’t know if you’ve seen that image.Someone sent it to me on WhatsApp, so I assume it must be all over social media. The image is eye-opening.And honestly, not unexpected. It shows two brains. One is the brain of someone working the old-school way. “A pelo”, as we say in Spanish… or “a Puerta gayola”. And the other is someone using ChatGPT to work. The brain of the poor soul grinding it out manually, like a farmer without a tractor, is lit up like a Christmas tree. Full of colors. Bursting...
